Presentation Description:

Many adolescents face both expected and unexpected death loss throughout their high school years. The ensuing grief can lead to problems in school, mental health issues, relationship strain, and negative sense of self; these grief responses may become especially intense if the loss is sudden or violent. The Adolescent Grief and Loss group is an empirically-supported group intervention that significantly reduces adolescent physical, social, emotional, and cognitive grief responses. It fosters mutual support and connection to others via various tasks and activities associated with each group session. This presentation gives participants the opportunity to learn about the application of these group activities.

About the Presenter:

Pamela A. Malone, Ph.D., LCSW, FT (Fellow in Thanatology) has over 30 years of clinical experience in a variety of settings. She maintains a private clinical practice in which she provides individual, couples, and family therapy, as well as adolescent groups. She is also a clinical supervisor for master’s level clinicians, and is Assistant Professor-in-Practice at the University of Texas Arlington. Research, presentation, and publications focus on loss and grief, trauma, and natural disaster survival. Her book, Counseling Adolescents through Loss, Grief, and Trauma was published by Routledge in 2016.

Objectives:

Learning Objective One: Participants will learn about the unique needs of grieving adolescents who experience and express their grief through various physical, emotional, social, and cognitive responses. Each of these grief response categories will be outlined, discussed, and provided with examples.

Learning Objective Two: Participants will gain information about the impact of grief on adolescents and the possible ensuing problems in school, mental health issues, relationship strain, and negative sense of self; these grief responses may become especially intense if the loss is sudden or violent.

Learning Objective Three: Participants will be provided with the tasks and activities that compose each session of the six-week Adolescent Grief and Loss Group. The ideal developmentally appropriate grief and loss group also teaches and increases coping strategies, identifies and minimizes risk factors, and maximizes protective factors.
